Welcome to Hope Beach. A place of intoxicating beauty . . . where trouble hits with the force of a hurricane.
Inheriting a beautiful old hotel on the Outer Banks could be a dream come true for Libby. The inn cries out for her restorer’s talent and love of history. She’s delighted to learn of the family she never knew she had. And the handsome Coast Guard lieutenant she’s met there on the island could definitely be the man of her dreams.
But Libby soon realizes that the only way she can afford the upkeep on the inn is to sell it to developers who are stalking the island. The father who willed her the inn has died before she could meet him, and her newfound brother and sister are convinced she’s there to steal their birthright. Worst of all, her best friend and business partner has been kidnapped before her eyes, and Libby’s under suspicion for the crime.
Libby’s dream come true is becoming a nightmare. Her only option is to find her friend and prove her innocence, or lose everything on the shores of Hope Island.
Libby always believed her father had died when she was a child. When her business partner, Nicole, visits Hope Island and inadvertently discovers Libby’s true background, she’s hurt and confused. Why did her father leave her and her mother? Why did her mother lie to her about him? After Nicole is abducted, Libby is investigated for the crime. But if Libby is innocent, who is behind it? Could it be one of her siblings, neither of whom is happy that Libby has inherited Tidewater Inn from their father?
Colleen Coble once again takes us to a small coastal town, this time in North Carolina during hurricane season. Hope Beach needs some financial intervention, but the townsfolk don’t want the place to lose its unique identity. A proposed ferry will bring more tourists, but no one likes the idea of a big resort on the island. If Libby has to sell the Inn, it’s probable it will be demolished to make way for that resort. Is Nicole’s abduction connected to the plans for the resort?
Batten down the hatches for a great summer read. Libby is determined to find Nicole and get to know her new family. Coast Guard member Andy wants to help her, but he’s got his hands full with his wayward nephew. Help arrives in the form of a search and rescue dog Coble’s long time readers will immediately recognize. I loved the descriptions of Hope Island and Tidewater Inn and – as a lover of history – hoped the Inn would be saved from the wrecking ball. The only thing I didn’t really get was the motive for Nicole’s abduction, but life is never straightforward and there’s plenty in this novel for the reader to enjoy.
