From bestselling author Kathleen Y’Barbo comes Millie’s Treasure, the second book in The Secret Lives of Will Tucker series, a new set of novels involving romance, adventure, and hidden identity.
Memphis 1890—Bookish heiress Millie Jean Cope is as clever as she is beautiful. Unfortunately, though adept at solving puzzles and cryptograms, she doesn’t realize her new fiancé isn’t who he claims to be, but instead is a charming scoundrel. The infamous Will Tucker is presenting himself as a British gentleman, Sir William Trueck, though in reality he is a crafty criminal looking for a hidden map to a secret treasure.
Pinkerton agent Kyle Russell has been on Tucker’s trail for years. At last Kyle believes he has Tucker cornered, but he is uncertain whether the lovely woman on the con man’s arm is an unsuspecting victim or willing accomplice. Finding reasons to spend time with Millie is easy. Keeping himself from falling in love with her is another issue entirely.
Will Tucker has escaped from prison and is now masquerading as an English aristocrat. His latest target is the Cope family and it appears Millie Cope is to the bride in a business marriage. She doesn’t love Sir William, but believes she could make a life with him. More importantly, the marriage will give her escape from her father and his lack of understanding regarding her book smarts. In his opinion, books and learning are for men. He won’t even allow her access to a newspaper! Millie’s life is turned upside down when Kyle enters it, not least because he sees her as an intelligent equal.
Kyle Russell was a supporting character in the first book of Y’Barbo’s series, Flora’s Secret. The second title picks up where that one left off, and it’s probably worthwhile to read them in order so you’re familiar with the storyline. Some readers may find it implausible in parts, especially due to Kyle’s inventions that often get him and Millie out of trouble. These inventions, however, are what mark the series as part of the steam punk genre in which Victorian society meets science fiction. Y’Barbo’s characters are delightful and I found the book difficult to put down. A repeated promise to read, “Just one more chapter,” resulted in me finishing it in one sitting!
The next book in the series, Sadie’s Secret, will be released in February 2014.
